Jordie Lane Announces
Second Album ‘Blood Thinner’ and National Tour.

Melbourne’s Jordie Lane returns from an extended stint in the U.S. to release his second album, Blood Thinner. To celebrate its impending release on Friday, July 15th (Vitamin Records), Jordie is thrilled to announce a national tour with more than 20 dates across our great big land in July and August.

Jordie Lane’s second LP takes a sharp and unique turn away from his critically acclaimed studio debut, Sleeping Patterns. Completely stripped back to the bare bones of
recording techniques, the tracks on Blood Thinner were captured between a remote desert motel room, a basement and, finally, a
bleeding hot garage in Eagle Rock, LA.

Responsible for almost every sound on the recording, Jordie creates some truly unique
sounds using everything from kitchen utensils, wine glasses, boxes and banjo skins, and even a fan-powered harmonium found on the side of the highway for $10.

Co-produced and mixed by multi Grammy Award winner Tom Biller, (Beck, Kanye West, Karen O), and mastered by Grammy
award winner Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering, Hollywood, Blood\Thinner is a record that travels across landscapes with gospel choirs, near-techno beats, campfire folk songs, bluegrass and West-coast country. It’s the journey of a lonesome traveller dealing with such heavy themes as anxiety, betrayal, guilt and sinning. Drifting between the lines of love and money, and always staying true to Jordie’s storytelling prowess.

After releasing his highly acclaimed debut album Sleeping Patterns in June 09, Jordie has since played sold-out tours across the country, and has appeared on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks, and SBS’s RockWiz, as well as being included on Triple J’s ‘Like A Version Vol 6′, for his brilliant version of MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel’ with Jen Cloher.
Jordie has been invited to play shows alongside artists such as Cat Power(USA), Loudon Wainwright III, Neko Case(USA), Charlie Parr(USA), Old Crow Medicine Show(USA) and National tours with locals, Tex Perkins and Ash Grunwald. And Festivals including Port Fairy 07,09,11, Falls Festival 09-10 and West Coast Blues Roots 2010.
Blood Thinner is out July 15 on Vitamin Records

Heralded as a favorite among Canada’s new breed of independent musicians, Dan Mangan’s travels initially took him everywhere but home. Spending most of the last six years toting guitar and merch-sack, Dan experienced Vancouver as more of a resting place than roost. He toured nearly non-stop in support of his debut album Postcards And Daydreaming, testing his words, honing his craft, and building a dedicated following. Graciously, if un-strategically, Mangan pretty much accepted every gig that came his way. He train’d and plane’d on his own throughout North America, Europe and Australia because he couldn’t afford to bring a band along. When he cobbled together funds to get a second album made, he enlisted Toronto based producer John Critchley and spent weeks at Green Door Studios, bringing in musical collaborators from around the country. By the time that sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice (named in reference to a Kurt Vonnegut calypso) hit the airwaves across his homeland, Dan had already cut his teeth on the road.

Recently signed to Arts & Crafts, the trail-blazing indie label that brought us Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Stars, Dan Mangan is the first on their roster from the Pacific Northwest. Though Vancouverites once envied the thriving music scenes of Montreal and Toronto, Mangan’s rain-soaked hometown has since developed a potent scene of its own – in recent years, its eclectic and supportive musical community has produced the likes of The New Pornographers, Ladyhawk, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Black Mountain, and Japandroids. Mangan is yet another native son of this emergence.

The American release of Nice, Nice, Very Nice comes in the wake of its release in Canada, which saw the good natured and unassuming songwriter skyrocket to critical and fan acclaim. A tidal wave of accolades landed Dan on the covers of publications from coast to coast, and his career went into serious over-drive.

First, fan word-of-mouth and an enthusiastic blogosphere got the infectious single “Robots” onto listener- request playlists and into heavy play rotation on Canadian radio. Next, XM Satellite’s The Verge named Mangan Artist of the Year, beating out better-known acts for a $25,000 prize. Then Canada’s public broadcaster (CBC) championed “Robots” as Best Song and Best Vocals of 2009. There were showcase appearances at SXSW, more gigs across Europe and throughout the UK, a record deal in Australia, and even a performance in Dubai. Meanwhile, Nice, Nice, Very Nice sat at #1 on the iTunes Canada Singer/Songwriter chart for nearly six months straight. And to top it all off, Mangan was invited to play at England’s legendary Glastonbury Festival – on the prestigious John Peel Stage, to boot..

Coffee shops and small bars transitioned to much larger sold-out theatres. Nice, Nice, Very Nice was becoming a Canadian hit. Nobody seemed more surprised or appreciative than Mangan himself – “I set my expectations low and my hopes very high, “ he says, “and with the help of so many people, somehow, it always works out in between.”

Dan’s songs brim with subtle images and irreverent wit. He has a knack for making what is quaint seem universal and what is universal quaint, so that even his most layered lyrics feel strangely familiar. His uniquely gravelled voice conveys a rare type of honesty, a gift that seems to transcend demographics. On stage, his presence is easy and open. It could work against him, but there’s no façade; here’s a talented, hard-working and unpretentious musician with a poet’s way of seeing through absurdity.

With Nice, Nice, Very Nice, Mangan seems to be unwilling to pitch his musical flag in any single section of the record store. He dabbles and teases genre all the way from the indie-rock roar of “Road Regrets” to the string-soaked, orchestral pop of “Fair Verona”. Along the way, he visits everything from the alt-country flavour of “Et Les Mots Croisés” to the 3 a.m.-come-down chamber-folk of “Set the Sails” and the clapboard-shack bluegrass we can hear in “Some People” and “Sold”.

The diversity of Dan’s collaborators has no doubt influenced the versatility of his writing. He has shared stages with everyone from Holy F*ck, Broken Social Scene and Julian Casablancas to Sarah Harmer, Horse Feathers and The Broken Family Band. “There’s something to be said for running from pigeonholes,” says Mangan of creative process. “I love the fact that innovators like Radiohead and Wilco have never made the same album twice. Or that Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear can play a sarong-wrapped folk-fest in Northern California, or just as easily to hip kids in French bars.”

Two of Melbourne’s best up and coming bands join forces for some party times on the ‘Woah Nelly’ tour. Taking in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and regional Victoria, the ‘Woah Nelly!’ tour will be short, sharp and straight to point. Point being – get there and see two of the most exciting bands to come out of the Melbourne underground scene in a long time.
The Boo Hoo Hoo’s - Updating the sounds of The Beatles, Jeff Buckley and The Strokes with their own brand of simple, no bullshit, guitar pop (‘Whatever the hell that equates to’, Ben admits), the Boo Hoo Hoo’s have become a staple in Melbourne’s live music scene since farewelling the schoolyard. Having played such iconic venues as The Espy, Revolver, and The Old bar, the boys have won over not only the punters, but also industry figureheads who have been quick to get the boys into the studio to lay down some tracks. The result? Songs like ‘B&B’, ‘Stop’ and ‘Into the Wild’, which show a song-writing maturity far beyond the band’s years.
The Ravenous - The Ravenous are a three-piece band from Melbourne’s inner north that play vibing, snazzy, heartfelt, robust, wonder-sounds. Their musical repertoire demonstrates a love for fun without sounding trivial or cheesy. Comparisons have been made to the power-pop of Weezer and the interesting hooks and melodies of Ween and the Flaming Lips.
How can one band be so crazed yet feel so right?! “This is great,” a punter might say, mug of ale in their paw. “Such a warm party-pop flavour! But wait, what’s this? Now it’s time for psychedelic rock?
By Jove, the contrast is rad-maxing me out!”. To be sure, there is much fun to be had at a Ravenous show.

‘Woah Nelly’ tour feat’ The Boo Hoo Hoo’s and The Ravenous proudly presented by Trusty Chords Music.

Thursday July 15th – The Karova Lounge, Ballarat. With Dark Arts.
Friday August 6th – MUM @ World Bar, Sydney, NSW
Saturday August 7th – The Hamilton Station Hotel, Newcastle, NSW. With Like Alaska and James Wiley (Hot Girls)

MATT CORBY

‘MY FALSE’ and ‘LIGHTHOME’

Having spent the last 9 months writing and recording in London, Melbourne and Sydney, and playing live shows across Australia and London, local Sydney singer/songwriter Matt Corby is releasing his first new material since his debut EP ‘Song For…’ in 2009.

‘My False’ is a stomping folk anthem recorded in Melbourne with Dann Hume, who produced Lisa Mitchell’s debut album ‘Wonder’, whilst ‘Lighthome’, recorded in London late last year, is a stunningly stark ode to the draw of home. In February, Lighthome was featured on the critically acclaimed UK Communion compilation, brainchild of Mumford and Sons Ben Lovett.

Both tracks will be available online from May 21.

2009 was an incredible year for Matt. He released his critically acclaimed debut EP ‘Song For…’, signed a publishing deal out of the UK with industry giant BMG and has signed a record deal with Communion, one of the hottest independent labels in the UK.

Over the next 6 months, Matt will record his debut UK EP in London with Communion, play his first national Australian tour in July, support Mumford and Sons across two shows at the Enmore Theatre and finish off his debut Australian album due for release later this year.

‘My False’ and ‘Lighthome’ are released on May 21, 2010 through Scorpio Music

Matt Corby plays at Baby Black Espresso Bar, Saturday July 1oth. Supported by Ben Dowd (The Boo Hoo Hoo’s). Tickets are $10.00 presale from Baby Black Espresso Bar – phone 03 5367 5156 or book online at moshtix here!

Johnny has done a track by track discription of the album offering a fantastic insight as to what made the songs and where the inspiration came from for each of them. Included in the feature is a great review and film clips for numerous songs off the album. Check it out here!!!

The album ‘Turn Against This Land’ is currently in all good independent record stores across Australia and JBHiFi’s. If you local store or JBHiFi don’t have it, tell them to get off their lazy arses and order it in from Poison City Records!!
