Ribbons Patterns started at Christmas party in 2007 over red wine in plastic cups as a project between friends. Blueline Medic singer and guitarist, Donnie Dureau, had been playing sporadic shows under his own name with a tea chest of broken folk and tradjazz; songs beaded together in moments of respite far away from the madding rock crowd. On the advice of one listener, he sought a band to put flesh on his down-trodden hymns, dapper ditties and urban stories. Long time friends, Matt Ryan and Kylie Smith laid the foundations bringing brushes, sticks and keys, while Jim Morris’s double bass helped brick the walls. Beyond that initial quartet, Jamie Hay’s banjo soon gave Ribbons Patterns a front porch, and Bec Martin’s soulful voice brought a high roof. It seemed fitting that Jamie would christen the band with the same name as one of its songs, a track that all members would take the stage for.

Ribbons Patterns has no deadlines, no known life expectancy. It exists whenever one or more members are present and there are songs to be played. They are, at this very moment, a little more than half way through recording that handful of songs that Donnie first penned. It is likely that a recording will be made available to the public before 2011.
